The Cougar Tutoring and Learning Centers are designed to help students in a variety of subjects from core curriculum to CTE designated courses. The tutoring offered through this program is not meant to replace classroom instruction, or any other aid offered by professors. Instead, the tutoring program operates to provide an additional scope of information and support to students outside of class. As a Coastal Bend student, it is important to know that all tutoring and tutoring supports are free and available to you at any given time.

Once you have selected a tutor and a time and day, we will take care of the rest! I’ll contact our tutors to make sure they are available, then call you to confirm the session and put together everything on Microsoft TEAMs! We always make a TEAMs in case an emergency happens, and you cannot attend the session in-person.

Coastal Bend College offers tutoring in multiple modalities to fit your needs as a student. This includes the following:

Face to Face Tutoring
Face to Face Tutoring would be a one-on-one session with a tutor in-person. This mode of tutoring is based on what subjects our tutors can provide support in.

Remote Tutoring
Remote Tutoring is a one-on-one tutoring session with an online tutor. All remote tutoring is done through Microsoft TEAMs.

Group Tutoring
Group Tutoring is available for small groups of 2-4 that may need direction together. Group Tutoring is offered both Face to Face and Remotely.

Revolving Tutoring
Revolving sessions are Tutor Coordinator approved sessions by the tutor and tutee to meet weekly or bi-weekly to go over topics in the class. These are helpful to students that may need more support or prefer consistent tutoring.

Writing Center
The Writing Center is a relaxed, supportive, and judgment free zone for writers of all calibers. At the Writing Center we can provide students with a place to go over their papers from outline to final edits and revision.

Students can attend the centers to go over a paper with their tutor in a one-on-one fashion, in-person or remotely, and get appropriate feedback for their assignments. No type of writing is big or small enough. We are available to help with everything such as formatting a discussion post all the way to putting those wonderful finishing touches on your final draft.

Have a group of friends that want to come in for peer review? We can assist with that as well! Together, we can establish a supportive writer’s workshop to examine different perspectives and ideas!

Unable to come by? Not a problem! Simply email the Tutor Coordinator with a paper you wish to get comments and feedback on, and he will pass it along to the tutors to check over elements such as a thesis statements, transitions, supporting details, in-text citations, and the many elements of structure. If you would like more than one tutor to look at it, you may request more tutors examine it or even the Tutor Coordinator!

The Writing Center is an extension of the Cougar Tutoring and Learning Center with a tutor at the Beeville, Alice, and Kingsville site available for students to discuss papers with!

Math Center aka MATH SQUAD!
Our Math Tutoring Center features a small team of tutors that we fondly call “The Math Squad.” Math Squad tutors can provide support from Developmental Math to College Algebra and more advanced fields such as Statistics.

The Math Center has a mix of online and remote tutors available for sessions depending on availability. Students can attend their session in a private one-on-one fashion or get together in a small group for a session.

Worried about your midterm and finals when it comes to MATH-1314? Don’t fret. Our Math Tutors will provide you with a Midterm or Final Review that will go over all major topics covered in MATH- 1314. We will offer this during our Midterm/Final Week Events, but students can request the session or video recording to study.

Spanish Lab
¿Quieres mejorar tu español? We can help with that! The Spanish Lab is a combination of our Spanish Tutors and our Learning Specialist, Nancy Brett. As a team, they can provide resources ranging from conjugation support to a place to practice speaking comfortably!

Tutoring sessions can be arranged in a one-on-one format or as a group with in-person and remote options available. In-person sessions will see you work with the tutors over basic vocabulary terms to stringing along grammatically correct sentences for your assignments.

Group sessions can be offered with one to two tutors being able to provide extra support so you can hear what a sample conversation should sound like, as you develop the talking points for your given assignments!

We even have a Spanish Strategy workshop that can be provided to students at request, the workshop is engaging and filled with practice techniques and opportunities to speak the language to your partners and aloud!

Learning Workshops
Learning Workshops provide students a chance to learn about skills that can be used to better support their transition to college. The sessions act as a “secret guide” to academic success and are available to any students, staff, or faculty. Each session goes about 45 minutes and features information, activities, and handouts.

These sessions are also offered throughout the semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the Grady C. Hogue Learning Resource Center. If an off-site student would like to attend a session remotely, all sessions can be accessed through Microsoft TEAMs links sent out at the beginning of each month through Cougar Mail or through sign-ups at the Links below:
