Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) 

Are you driven to start a career on the open road? The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training Program at Coastal Bend College provides the hands-on experience and professional instruction you need to become a safe, confident, and qualified commercial driver. Whether you choose Class A or Class B training, you’ll gain the skills necessary to operate commercial vehicles and prepare for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) CDL licensing exam. 

Coastal Bend College offers CDL Class A and Class B training programs across its Beeville, Alice, Kingsville, and Pleasanton campuses. Both programs begin with two weeks of online self-paced training through the Blackboard Learning Shell, followed by intensive driving instruction.  

  • CDL Class A Training: 8 weeks total 

    • Weeks 1-2 = online coursework 

    • Weeks 3-6 = behind-the-wheel training (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) 

    • Weeks 7-8 = behind-the-wheel training (Monday - Thursday) 
       

  • CDL Class B Training: 6 weeks total 

    • Weeks 1-2 = online coursework 

    • Weeks 3-6 = behind-the-wheel training (Tuesdays and Thursdays)  

The licensing exam is administered during the final week of driving training, with three attempts allowed.

    • Pleasanton: 3/2/26 - 3/22/26 (online instruction); 3/23/26 - 4/30/26 (driving) 

    • Alice: 4/27/26 - 5/10/26 (online instruction); 5/11/26 - 6/17/26 (driving) 

    • Beeville: 6/15/26 - 6/28/26 (online instruction); 6/29/25 - 8/4/26 (driving) 
       

  • Class B Schedule:

How to Apply 

  1. Prepare Required Documents:  

  • DOT Physical: Schedule an appointment with your physician to have a Department of Transportation physical exam. They will provide you with a completed form.  

  • Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP): Visit your local Department of Public Safety office to test for a CLP. You will need to pass a knowledge test specific to your desired CDL class (A or B). Refer to the resources section for details on the tests. Commercial Learner’s Permits are only valid for six months and must be valid until the end of your course.  

  • Driver's License: Make a photocopy of your current valid driver's license 

  1. Submit Your Application:  

  • Download the CDL training program application from this email thread.  

  • Complete the application form.  

  • Send the completed application (in pdf, or photocopy format) to ce@coastalbend.edu 

  1. Pay Tuition:  

  • Class B Training: $1,500.00  

  • Class A Training: $4,000.00 

  1. Attend Your Course:  

  • Once your application and documents are received and approved, you will be notified by Coastal Bend College regarding your acceptance or admission status.
