Hazlewood Exemption
The Hazlewood Exemption is a State of Texas education benefit that may exempt eligible veterans and certain eligible dependents from paying tuition at Coastal Bend College.
Eligibility Requirements
Veterans may be eligible to receive the Hazlewood Exemption if they meet all of the following requirements:
- Were Texas residents at the time they entered active military service.
- Meet Texas residency requirements at the time of enrollment at a public institution of higher education.
- Served at least 181 days of active military service, excluding basic training.
- Have no remaining entitlement under VA educational benefits. Documentation verifying exhausted benefits may be obtained by contacting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-888-442-4551.
- Provide a DD Form 214 showing an Honorable Discharge, General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions, or Honorable Separation from military service.
- Are not in default on a federal or state education loan.
- Have attempted fewer than 150 credit hours using the Hazlewood Exemption since Fall 1995.
- Eligible dependent children of veterans whose parent died as a result of a service-related illness or injury may also qualify.
Covered Expenses
Students approved for the Hazlewood Exemption receive a waiver of tuition, including certain Continuing Education courses that receive state tax support. The exemption also covers specific institutional fees.
